It’s that time of year again, where Halloween is upon us. It’s about costume parties, getting spooky and eating tons of processed candy.I’m all for eating sweet treats on special occasions, but Halloween candy is a different beast.
Do you ever wonder what’s in your Halloween candy? It’s actually pretty terrifying. Most halloween candy should go directly into the trash can. Today most conventional candy is full of chemicals, colours, additives and is genetically modified. It has no nutrient value and causes many health issues, behaviour issues, and cavities. So why are we eating this crap? Probably because candy is basically a drug. It gives you a rush, almost like a high. That’s why people crave it, especially children. Have you ever seen a child after they have eaten candy? They go into psycho mode. They experience mood swings, irritability, are super hyper, and have meltdowns.
Michael Pollan warns us that we “shouldn’t be eating anything our grandparents wouldn’t recognize as food”. Would our elders eat these scary ingredients? Probably not.
Are you ready? I’m going to share with the top 6 most common toxic ingredients in halloween candy today. Let’s peel back the wrappers and expose 6 toxic chemicals that’s in Halloween candy, shall we? Get your garbage bags ready.
Toxic Ingredient #1
Sugar: as known as dextrose, fructose, and glucose, aspartame, sucralose.
Refined sugar is simply white poison. It’s highly addictive and destructive. It has been depleted of its life forces, vitamins and minerals. What is left consists of pure, refined carbohydrates.
Health effects: It feeds cancer cells, triggers weight gain, diabetes, can damage your heart, and promotes premature aging. Refined sugar will be in each and every conventional candy. Refined sugar will be in each and every conventional candy or chocolate you pick up this Halloween.
Artificially coloured candy may look all pretty and fun, but it is doing more harm than good. Artificial colours are derived from coal tar, and every single one is a carcinogen. Many of them have been banned in some countries around the world, but they are still commonly used.
Fact: Orange #1 was banned in the 1950 because so many kids got sick on Halloween. Tasty huh?
Health effects: It is linked to behavioural problems ( hyperactivity), asthma, hives, lower IQ in children, learning difficulties, heart, liver and stomach difficulties, and cancer in large quantities, especially FD&C Blue No. 1 and 2, FD&C Red No.3 and 40, FD&C green No.3, and FD&C yellow No. 5 and 6.
Artificial flavours are synthetic mixtures not found in nature, and are designed to mimic natural flavour. Over 1,700 artificial flavours are approved by the FDA. Way to go guys! Thanks for keeping our health at your best interest.
Health effects: Some people experience headaches, nausea, drowsiness and other symptoms.
Almost every commercial candy out there has artificial flavours in them.
Soy lecithin is extracted from soybeans. It emulsifies cacao and cacao butter in candy such as M&M’s. It keeps the ingredients from separating in the chocolate.
Health effects: Soy messes with our endocrine system and hormone balance, and it also mimics estrogen. Not something you really want to be consuming. But the FDA claims it’s safe for consumption.
High Fructose Corn Syrup
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) comes from yup you guessed it, corn. They call it ‘corn sugar’; I call it bad for you. Up to 90% of the corn on the market is from GMO corn. HFCS is a cheap sweetener that is put in virtually every commercial product out there.
Health effects: It can lead to liver disease, kidney damage, digestive disorders, and allergies in high doses. Most candy contains this creepy little chemical, so it’s very hard to avoid…unless you avoid commercial candy altogether.
Hydrogenated Palm kernel oil
This ingredient is also lurking in most candy. 80% of palm kernel oil is the saturated kind (LDL cholesterol).It is used because it is a cheaper alternative to healthier oils such as coconut oil.
Milk fat also does this. It is composed of triglycerides and also thickens artery walls. Snickers and Milky Way contain milk fat as well as most chocolate bars.
Health effects: This accumulates plaque in your arteries and raises bad cholesterol levels. There is no safe amount of Trans fat in your diet, so you should avoid it like a plague.
Toxic ingredient #6
PGPR is a cheap substitute for cocoa butter; it is put in most candy bars such as Kit Kat, and Hershey’s milk chocolate bars to make them rich and smooth.
Health effects: The FDA deemed PGPR safe for humans as long as you restrict your intake to 7.5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Otherwise you’d be open to reversible liver enlargement at higher intakes, wow.
So this halloween, please be aware of what’s in your child’s bag. I’m sure 95% of it will be candy with these ingredients. I have a 6 year old and we save her candy for christmas, and decorate the best gingerbread house ever! You can also tell your kids how detrimental conventional candy really is. I really believe that education starts at home, and is the determining factor if your children consume unhealthy candy or not. Yeah sure they may get influenced from their friends at school, but giving them the foundation of what is unhealthy, and why, is a good start. If you allow your child to consume candy, well then don’t be surprised at your child’s behaviour, ill health, or the fact that you are spending thousands of dollars at the dentist. There is no way to avoid halloween, unless of course you don’t celebrate it. But there is a way around not giving your child candy, and that’s through eduction and tough love.
